The Thin Red Line

The Thin Red Line is a film about a group of American soldiers in war on an island near Australia in the Solomons. Malick uses a lot of symbolism with nature and war in his film. He uses the woods as a symbol of growth. He uses the sun as a symbol of rebirth. There is also a lot of water throughout the film which symbolizes life and birth. Private Witt goes throughout the film afraid of death. He is afraid of the unknown and what will happen after death. At the beginning and the end of the film, Malick shows Private Witt swimming through the water, but at the end of the film he disappears into he rays of sunlight.
This film was interesting to me in a lot of ways and was not a typical war movie. This film goes into the depth of the soldiers life and not just the action part of the war. The audience gets to see how they feel during war and what the soldiers life is like throughout.
