The theme of Love in Gladiator

Gladiator is a critically acclaimed movie that has capture the attention of action lovers all over the world. It is set in ancient Rome and the hero of the story is Maximus, Rome's greatest general turned slave. This story, while bloody and action packed, does something interesting with the idea of love and the role that plays in loyalty. The most obvious example of love in the movie is Maximus's love for his family. His family was slaughtered at the hands of the new emperor of Rome, Commodus. His love for his family is his motivation for every decision he makes throughout the film. The interesting thing done with love in this movie is not the love of a husband and father displayed through Maximus but is the "love" declared and shown through Commodus.

Commodus claimed to love his father deeply but in the end killed him in a jealous rage. The next, and far more odd attribute, is his love for his sister. Commodus has a creepy infatuation with his sister throughout the movie. His sister has been in love with Maximus for years but could not have him because of his family. This causes even more jealousy from Commodus. This love, that almost seems romantic in a way, is one of Commodus's motivations through the film and a source of great pain for his character. This perverted form of love is what twist the knife in Commodus and enrages throughout the film. Does love cause everyone to act irrationally? There are not very many examples in film or life of people doing the smart thing because they are in love.
