Religion and sports
For as long as I can remember, God has always been around in sports in one capacity or another. Whether it be a moment of silence, a prayer before a game for safety, or a fan asking God to let their team win, he's always been there in some capacity. Why is this? Obviously when it comes to athletes, they are still people and they do have their own personal faith. However, aren't there some athletes that don't believe in God, or are confused about their faith? Where does the line lay where people are uncomfortable talking about God in sports? When we see major injuries, we very often see coaches or sometimes comentators asking for prayer for the injured athlete. We see many teams every day get in large groups and pray together. Finally, the national anthem is played at any sporting event in the U.S., and that even talks about God for a split second.
My answer is simple; personal faith is larger than massive cultural resistance. The United States is on a slope of young people not being interested, or at minimum being more skeptical of religion, specifically Christianity. However, while that may be true, people still have a great calling and feeling to praise God in all facets of their life, sometimes without even meaning to. It has become so vital in our culture, that people don't even notice they do it. Sports is just one area in which it is noticeable. Will that begin to disappear with the dissolution of religion in America? We will see. Personally, I hope not.
