Photojournalist Explorations in Media Ecology
Somewhere along the way, after I had been exposed to the idea of spatial nonhomogeneity, and my senses were awakened to the intersections of the sacred on the profane level, I began to see these juxtapositions everywhere. I wanted to document it somehow to count how often these instances were occurring. I started a photo journal under the title “axis mundi”. This practice helped me to internalize some of the concepts in Explorations in Media Ecology:
“new communication technologies create new places where myths are mediated”

these photos each capture a tangible visualization of a dichotomy.
the caution tape is a profane imposition on the sacred earth beneath.
the floral bouquet erupting from the dead earth is a symbol of axis mundi.
from the earth springs life & beauty, reaching upward toward the heavens.
the light streaming through the window in the stair chamber, highlighting the infrastructure of the institution. the light interrupts the daily goings on the humanity, reminding us that nature exists and persists despite and within the constructions of man.
this project has been an exercise in meaning making.
" places where the public discovers a concrete grounding for cultural meaning and world building"
