Film Techniques

The short film "Buuny" depicts the main characters transition from land of the living to the afterlife. This film uses a secondary character as a guide for the main character to make safe passage to the afterlife. We see throughout the short animation, the moth or guide is shown through multiple different film techniques. The animator used whimsical music whenever the moth was shown to intend for the viewer to associate mischief with the bug. The moth is shown messing with the bunny while she is baking. The bunny becomes increasingly frustrated with the moth. One can infer when the screen becomes tilted after the bunny falls asleep that the character has passed. As the bunny moves towards the glowing oven the camera angle remains tilted to emphasis a level of mystery and to show that this is the beginning of the bunny's journey to the afterlife. The moth reaches it's true spiritual significance when the bunny enters the oven. The bunny changes from annoyed to grateful when looking at the moth. The music associated with the moth changes as well once the bunny enters the portal like oven. The music now associated with the moth is calming, which helps the viewer distinguish what is going on in the short film. The changes in music and camera angles really emphasizes to the viewer the mystical qualities and transition from life to afterlife.

In "Harold and Maude" the director uses slight techniques to allude to a deeper meaning that the viewer has to search for. In the scene with Harold and his mother, he makes eye contact with the screen and relays a sense of independence but when Harold looks back and sees his other he realizes that she is always watching. Maude is shown always watching as well, but she does it in a less suffocating way then Harold's mother. Maude is shown passing along her wisdom to Harold and he is shown slightly disoriented. At the end there is a powerful comparison between the field of flowers and the large graveyard. 

"Paris, Texas" is a short film that references growth, identity, and improvement. Both Travis and his wife must work on themselves to realize their true identities and improve their relationship for the sake of their child. Travis is often shown following power lines as if searching for a connection.

The short film Bunny used many high angle overhead shots to depict the point of view of the moth. This perspective puts the audience in the position of the moth so we feel more sympathy when the bunny starts trying to kill it. Dutch angles, or canted angles were used primarily during the oven sequence to promote confusion and uncertainty since this is uncharted territory for the bunny and the audience. Exploring Film Techniques

“Bunny” is a short animation that depicts the transformation of the earthly body to the celestial form as the protagonist transitions into the afterlife. The moth symbolizes the guide, and we get this perception because of the different techniques used to portray the moth. The moth has a musical theme that has a driving and whimsical rhythm, giving the viewer an association of mischief with the insect. The shots portray the moth interfering with the bunny who is hard at work. The viewer resonates with the bunny’s reaction that the moth is an annoyance because the bunny is often in the side of the frame, with an open space for the moth to appear. The viewer expects that the moth will enter the frame to fill that space, yet when it does, the viewer still gets the sense that the moth is an unwelcome presence because of the bunny’s reaction as well as the presumed stupidity of the moth. Dead Man

Cold Fever and Dead Man both heavily rely on funeral rituals. Both main characters are slowly headed towards performing one, whether they know it or not. What struck me about William's Blake character is that he never seems to be aware of his slow approach towards death. He does not seem to realize he is mortally wounded, and perhaps if he could get back to civilization, he could survive. At the end of the film, William is still alive during his own funeral, making him an active participate in the ritual similar to Hirata's participation in his parents' burial rites. Both protagonists are in denial about something. For William, he is denial about his mortality, whereas Hirata is in denial about the importance and sacredness of a funeral ritual. Their journeys parallel each other in that regard, as they come closer to realizing what is truly important in their respective lives.
