Ecclesiastes: Meaningless Life
“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
What do people gain from all their labors
at which they toil under the sun?
at which they toil under the sun?
Ecclesiastes 1:1-3
This verse came to mind while watching many of the movies of the semester. Cold Fever is all about the journey of a man who had to perform the last rites for his parents who had died in Iceland. What did he really gain from any of that. Through the journey he himself almost died several times and is faced with his own mortality. What is the point when we all die eventually.
In Wings of Desire, the angels who never die even have a sense of meaningless existence. They simply watch humans live their life and exist in a plane without color or meaning.
In Apocalypse Now, The war rages on and soldiers continue on their normal routine. In some parts of the movie people are even surfing while bombs explode around them. The death and destruction continue on. Even after the mission is accomplished, did anything they did even matter in the end?
What is the reason for anything we do if everything will disappear or die in the end?
