Decalogue- we can't kill huh?
The sixth commandment in the Bible directed from God through Moses is Thou Shalt Not Kill. From this, we get the basic moral grounds that killing is wrong. Most people understand this to mean murder. As in, you shalt not kill an INNOCENT man. This would be referring to the kinds of killing such as Caine killing Abel in the book of Genesis. However, is this commandment suitable for war? God starts many wars in the Old Testament. And if we are to follow God's commandments and be good Christians/Jews, then shouldn't we follow those commandments. Yet... God kills many people. So many that he wiped the world out with a flood, not to mention the wars he started throughout Judges alone.
The difference is the interpretation of the term "killing". As I have said before, most interpret this to mean that we can't murder. For most, they understand this commandment as not to include war, as war is sometimes a necessary evil in the world. However, one is still killing people regardless of how its happening. So, does God have a clause that says war is okay? Doesn't Jesus say that we must love our neighbor as ourselves? How is killing in war loving our neighbor? And is God okay with that as long as its in war? Questions for the big man....
