Dead Man

The film Dead Man was one of my absolute favorites for the semester. This film brings up a lot of very interesting points about the fragility of life and how quickly it can be snuffed out at a moments notice. It also gives a very vivid example of the Native American way of looking at spirits, specifically those that have come back to earth. In the film, the Native went on the quest to help the "Spirit" return to the spirit realm. In the film, Blake is on the run after he is framed for murder of a woman that he did not kill. While on the run, Blake discovers a native named "Nobody" who helps him return to the spirit realm.

By the end of the film, the viewer is left wondering how Blake is going to get out of going down a river, apparently to his death. However, it seems that Blake is content with death at this point, after killing countless people along the way. He seems to be tired of running, and is therefore okay with death. In the end, this shows how fragile human life actually is, that it can be extinguished by one small piece of lead at any moment, along with about a billion other things. However, humans seem to find a way to survive seemingly unharmed into sometimes over one hundred years old. Honestly, kind of insane to think about how fragile we are, yet we find ways to live so long.
