Dead Man

In the film Dead Man, William Blake undergoes the spiritual journey throughout the film which ends in his death. I believe that this journey is similar to the one Hirata went through, but there also some differences. For one, Blake went through a much longer journey, and his ended in death whereas Hirata’s did not. Hirata had one singular purpose and goal at the end of his journey and it was to perform the religious ceremony for his parents whereas Blake’s was a journey up until his life was over.
In the film, William Blake comes across the Native American man named Nobody. Before this moment, Blake was shot by hunters, and when he asked Nobody to remove the bullet, he said no because it would kill Blake. Unfortunately, no matter what circumstance, Blake would wind up a dead man. Nobody also asks for Blake’s name and when he tells him, he believes that Blake is the famous poet William Blake. He then believes he needs to guide Blake to the afterlife so that he can die in the right way.
The one interesting thing that is different between this film and that of Cold Fever is that Dead Man is filled with a wilderness setting while Cold Fever is more icy and cold. This just adds to the various challenges that both Blake and Hirata had to face in both of their spiritual journeys which adds to the symbols in the films as a whole.
