Carol Danvers, Girl Wonder
04.04.19
The most powerful theme that I internalized from the film is the balance Carol achieves upon liberation from a false dichotomy between logic and emotion. Throughout the entire film, others manipulate Carol’s sense of identity.
Yon-Rogg and his people inject a false persona into her mind by manipulating her memories. She suffers from amnesia and apparently an overly acute sense of emotional awareness. No matter how hard she tries, she is never good enough.

Yon-Rogg trained her to believe that she is greatly flawed because of her inability to blindly follow orders. The men distort her emotional awareness and portray her sensitivity to injustice in a negative light, harping on about what they perceive to be recklessness and impulsivity.
Yon-Rogg purposefully instill this message in Carol’s mind to control her, fearing her untapped potential.
As Carol sets foot outside of a mental prison, she begins to embrace her intuition and emotion as strengths. Harnessing their power, she becomes unstoppable.

Through Carol’s character, we are empowered to believe that empathy is not a weakness, but a tremendous strength.
What the bad guys fail to see is that Carol’s intuition moves her to act with incredible courage, uninhibited by self-preservation. When someone else is in danger, she will intervene to advocate on their behalf.
“If there are lives at stake, I’ll fly the plane” she declares. The world would be a lot better off if there were more men and women like Carol Danvers.
