Buddhism in Princess Mononoke
The overall Buddhist theme in this film is that humans
experience suffering from bad karma that they earn over the years. With this
being said, there is a very key concept of asceticism and Awakening in the film
that is relative to the writings and teachings of Buddhism. Asceticism is the
idea that an individual can maintain severe self-discipline and can avoid all
forms of indulgence. Although Ashitaka, the protagonist of the film, was
directed not to leave the village, he still left knowing that this would be
challenging and potentially detrimental to his life. Because of this big step
he took though, he was able to attain enlightenment through his ascetic
experiences. These helped him because he was able to test himself and find out
that he truly was fit to reach enlightenment which is the same in Buddhism. You
take the necessary steps and if you succeed and prove your worth, you can reach
enlightenment.
