Buddhism in Kung Fu Panda

For my topic of choice, I wanted to focus on Buddhism in films because this is a very interesting topic related to the background of my family. My grandmother was Buddhist, so I find the religion to be very interesting and I find it even more interesting to see it depicted in film. The film Kung Fu Panda depicts many forms of Buddhism but the one piece that I want to focus on is the relationship between Master and students. In the film, Master Shifu continuously tries to teach Po about the ways of being a Kung Fu warrior. At first Po does not believe that Shifu can change him, but he eventually realizes that in order to be considered as a Kung Fu warrior, he must listen to his master. It is the same with us as people. In order to follow along the spiritual path that is laid out the in the Buddhist belief system, we only need a Spiritual Guide. If we believe that the guide will help us along that path, then it will. But we are the ones that have to decide that.

Another interesting aspect is when Master Oogway says, “We have to accept that we cannot control everything” (Kung Fu Panda). He believes in the definite relationship between cause and effect which translates to karma. This does in fact relate back to the belief system of karma and the Buddhist ideology as well.
