Religion and Film 2019

     In the Decalogue films by  Krzysztof Kieslowski, episode 1 portrays the 1st commandment and episode 5 portrays the 5th commandment.  Episode 1 details the life of a science professor and his son.  The son is curious about religion, but his father doesn't have faith in it.  Instead, his father puts faith into his computer.  His son asks to go skiing one night, so the father uses his computer to see if the ice will support his son.  The computer confirmed his son would be fine, so he goes off to ski.  Sadly, the his son falls into the ice and dies.      In episode 5, a young man kills a taxi driver and is put on death row.  The episode starts off with the young man doing petty crimes and acting childish.  But, takes a hard turn when he decides to murder his taxi driver and steal his car.  The young man is caught and put on trial.  He is found guilty and is put to death.      Both ...

In the film, Thin Red Line , war enters the peaceful island of Guadalcanal.   World War II has pitted the American and Japanese forces against each other in the Pacific.   The United States are securing island on their way towards defeating the Japanese mainland, which has brought them to Guadalcanal.   On their way towards the island, the American forces pick up the soldier, Private Witt, who had gone AWOL.   He and the rest of the soldiers are tasked with the operation to overtake Henderson Field, a Japanese occupied are on Guadalcanal Island.   The field are proved to be too dangerous for the US forces due to the Japanese residing in a bunker that overlooked the area.   After many American causalities and persistent bickering with high ranking officers, a small squad, that included Private Witt, was led to the crest of Henderson Field and were able to demolish the Japanese bunker. The reason why movies are so special as a form of expression is their ability to visualize concepts that where originally abstract and left to the imagination. Because of this film techniques (e.g. camera angles, lighting, colors, etc.) all carry a meaning and can add to the depth of the story line. Bunny: This is a short animated film about 7 minutes long. I noticed some other people writing their posts about it so i decided to check it out. The film uses light as the main point of conflict. The light of the kitchen where bunny is working has attracted a moth. This small moth is banging into the light trying to reach it. Bunny continues to try to get the moth to leave him alone. eventually he kills the moth and then throws him into the oven with his cake. He wakes up to the oven shaking and a light coming from it. While discussing Thin Red Line we talked about the role nature plays in the movie. The director emphasizes nature in this movie. During battle scenes there would be some visual cut away to some aspect of nature. The focus would not be on the tactics of the battle or the soldiers' heroics. One point i have been thinking about since that class discussion, is the indifference of nature shown by those cut aways. Nature does not care about which humans win or lose the day. Nature will simply live on. While some of the soldiers discuss awards and medals during the heat of battle nature continues on. People are dying and a bat hangs from a tree, or a bird flies over head. There is no glory in killing in nature. Killing happens and then nature moves on. Another point is the separation of humanity and nature. We separate ourselves from nature. Taking pride in our humanity and civilization. This movie could be both thought of as breaking that norm by having nature be shown during battle ...

    In the film Get Out directed by Jordan Peele, there is symbolism of racial conflict in society. For example, throughout the film, the main character who is African American is constantly judged and admired, not for his ability as an artist, but for his complexion and physical features. Another example of racial conflict is at the end of the movie when the main character finally deals with his kidnappers and the police arrive, Jordan Peele made the main antagonist use the police force as a weapon for dealing with the African American main protagonist.

     Captain Marvel is the last marvel super hero movie before Avengers: Infinity War. Though this movie box office success, Captain Marvel has overlying powerful themes which include determination. Throughout the movie, Captain Marvel experienced countless experiences where everyone would think she would give up. She went into OCS as a female pilot and she was failing, however, beyond the doubt she was receiving, she never gave up and stuck it out and she became a female pilot. However through sheer will and determination to find out her true potential, she was able to overcome almost any obstacle to pass her and become one of the strongest super-heroine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

    I think the mood of a movie is determined by the pictures in the film, the music, and the shots taken. It is not so much about just the plot. If you have good pictures in a film, then an audience is going to feel the movie. If you have the right music in a film,  the audience will be scared, sad, happy, excited, thrilled. I always like to say if there was no music in a scary movie, it would not be as scary, because the mood would not be the same for the audience. The sound effects and the music is what helps make the movie scary. The same for shots taken during a love story. If a director does not have the right shots during a love story, then what makes it a love story? The plot is the last thing in most cases I think. The plot is what makes the film complete.
